Louis Borenius (1949 - 2009)

Coup d'Etat - Heavy on the Tabasco!

Louis Borenius

Coup d'Etat was a "great live band, heavy on the Tabasco playing an instantly accessible collection of Latin-tinged grooves" (The Musician). Last of the AztecsLeader/composer Louis Borenius, who  played drums with a host of performers from ex-Soft Machine guitarist John Etheridge to soul band Sister Sledge, became the sage of the Simmons Silicone Mallet. His skilful solos were ably matched by the earthy sax of Greg Heath and the fine rhythm section of Simon Wallace, piano, Phil Scragg, bass, Richard Bailey (ex Incognito), drums and Gary Hammond, percussion. Their album, LAST OF THE AZTECS  received rave reviews in the press, and was also a favourite on Jazz FM. What made this band so different was the unique blend of Calypso, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms underpinning catchy tunes, and played with a great deal of humour. Louis, you are sorely missed!!
